I remember going to the farmers markets on Airline Dr. in The Heights a lot as young kid. It includes Caninos and a number of other stands and buildings. I’ve shopped here a bit as an adult as well, mostly around Christmas when it’s time to make tamales or for special meals. It’s the only place I know of where you can get fresh masa and of course all the dried chiles for the sauces. Unfortunately it’s a little inconvenient to get to for me to shop here regularly. These images are from a photo walk on February 6, 1010.

Boredom at The Farmers Market by Michael A Sanderson

To me, the people are what make a good market as much if not more than the produce. The farmers market in The Heights is always a great place to people watch. I am particularly intrigued by the selection, haggle, and the final exchange of money. Being in the Heights, there’s a wide variety of people to be seen. This morning was pretty cold for February and there weren’t as many folks out yet.

  1. I’ve made them solo every now and then. I used to make them every year (50 dozen or more at a time) with a friend of mine who moved here from Cabo San Lucas. She takes no shortcuts (or prisoners :-) ). I use a stand mixer for mine (and don’t always use the fresh masa – hope she doesn’t see this…) but *I* was the masa mixer when we made them together.
