As I was out walking the dogs last night, I noticed there were a lot of interesting clouds building around the downtown skyline. After I got the dogs back home, I grabbed my gear and headed back down to the bayou. I haven’t used my tripod very much so I took some time getting set up and found a good stable spot. The wind was blowing pretty hard and the gusts were causing some slight movement in the setup. What I learned:
- I probably should have tried to anchor it better with a weight. Or,
- Don’t use a lens hood. It acts as a sail on the front of the camera and will introduce some vibration/motion with every gust of wind. Besides – it wasn’t needed in the dark!
Anyway right as the sun set, the clouds cleared up a bit so the results weren’t quite as dramatic as I hoped for. Of course after it started getting dark, the clouds came back very thick. Anyway, I was all set up so I stayed after the sun went down to work on some long exposure shots and am pretty pleased with the results. I have started a Houston skyline at sunset gallery for the series of night time skyline shots. I plan on keeping an eye out for more sunset opportunities and adding to the gallery.
