July Photo Projects

July has started out to be VERY wet. The upside has been that the temperatures have stayed a little lower than they would otherwise be, but the downside is – I’m not taking my gear out into the rain. All the rain so far has been related to a hurricane that went inland several hundred miles south of here so I am sure in another day or two it will be back to hot, humid July.

After getting a little behind in May,  I am now a little ahead thanks to an annual  Texas State Parks Pass and an early visit from Mr. Senility.

I made my first walk along 40 Acre Lake and Horseshoe Lake Trails.

Photoday at the Houston Zoo was interesting, but I remember why I don’t like zoos in general and it’s not the creatures behind the cages that are the most bothersome. However, I’ve found a fully extended tripod creates an effective “Baby Stroller Defense Field”

A Flickr colleague and I drug ourselves out to Brazos Bend State Park at the crack of 5:20AM to set up for a sunrise photowalk at 40Acre Lake. The sky was very clear so there wasn’t as much drama as I had hoped.

Thanks to a goof in entering a date on my calendar (which I live by – if it’s on my calendar, it’s real) I wound up in Hermann Park on a Thursday evening and decided to make the best of it with another Flickr colleague who made the same temporal mistake.

I went to Brazos Bend State Park again and took part in a volunteer lead photowalk with Laszlo Perlaky of NaturalPerl photography. June’s theme was close-up photography.

Finally, I participated in a Flickr meetup at the Houston Museum of Natural Science’s Sugarland museum.

At Assignment: Houston, the theme for July is Favorite Places and Things in Houston. There are so many things I like about Houston. It’ll be interesting to see what I decide to take images of. Thru a Flickr friend,  I found out about another group, Houston Institute for Culture Travel Adventures, that has a couple of interesting events this month as well.

There are a couple of techniques I would like to practice with more. Panning with manual focus is something I would like to master since you loose autofocus when using a teleconverter with the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6  lens. I would still like to get out to the Lee and Joe Jamail Skatepark to work on motion capture shots and techniques.
