.
The Houston Museum of Natural Science’s Sugar Land Satellite Museum is a 43,000 square foot building that has a unique history of it’s own. The building used to be the Central State Prison Farm from 1939-1968. It was used for storage until 1999. Part of the facility was also used as a set in the movie, Powder.
The newly restored building will house a variety of permanent and traveling exhibitions that will serve as a focal point for a wide array of educational programs for area schools as well as the people of Sugar Land, Fort Bend County and beyond.
In June, HMNS hosted a Flickr group meetup in conjunction with Assignment Houston’s monthly assignment. There are many live exhibits as well as a really cool three dimensional globe projector that cycles through all the bodies in the solar system. They have a planetarium and mineral exhibit as well. It’s a really cool building and worth the drive for a visit.
