The human eye can distiquish around 11 f-stops, meaning we can see greater details in shadows and highlights than digital SLRs which can only distiquish about 5 f-stops. What we see with our eyes is not what the camera sees. We have to learn to see the light the way the camera sees the light. The five bars in a histogram represent those 5 f-stops and respresent the different brightness levels across those areas. Looking at the histograms for a capture helps us to see how the camera sees an exposure and helps us determine the “proper” exposure.
Light illuminates – Shadows define
- Shadows add a sense of depth and dimesion to our 2 dimensional representations of a 3 dimensional world.
- To avoid loosing details, expose for the highlights.
